Thanks to Helena, this has now been resolved.

For the benefit of anyone else who has a similar issue and finds this page via Google:

I registered my E.ON online account using a unique email address, using Gmail's username+whatever@gmail.com feature for additional security.
In this case it was username+eon@gmail.com.

The portal will accept an email address with a + in it, but the app won't. Unfortunately, once you've registered an account with such an address, it has to be deleted and re-registered with a new address without a +. If you still want it to be unique, you can add a period somewhere and gmail will still deliver it to you, ie user.name@gmail.com and username@gmail.com go to the same inbox.
