Cancellation Charges - Travel Republic

Ladies and Gents,

Like many on here, I have been impacted by the collapse of Monarch Airlines. However, this question is about a hotel I have booked - not the flight.

I booked a hotel in Gibraltar, via Travel Republic, back in July. I paid a £1 deposit - with the balance of £227 due on 27 Oct 17. I have tried to cancel today (having only spent £1 so far) - and Travel Republic want to charge me a £39 for cancelling.

I have emailed them an explained the situation - airline bust - no flights out of Luton to Gib etc etc - and am awaiting a reply. Also, the original credit card I paid with - no longer exists - as it has been replaced by a newer one with a different 16 digit number.

If anyone can advise:
1. If Travel Republic are legally entitled to charge me £39 cancellation (even though I have only paid £1 so far)?
2. What my rights are?
3. What happens if they try and take payment from a cc number that no longer exists?
4. Anything else I should know?

It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Paul

What are the cancellation terms for your booking? That will tell you your rights. It's likely you paid a low cost deposit, so the rest of the deposit will still be due.

The bank will pay for an amount you previously authorised on the old card number.

Took me seconds to find this:
If you've booked a hotel at a discounted rate, it's possible it may be non-refundable - however, this will always be highlighted to you at the time of booking.

With the exception of this, the following charges apply to all accommodation cancellations (including hotels booked with our £1 low deposit):

Any accommodation cancelled more than 3 days before departure: £40 cancellation fee (or the value of the booking if lower)
Any accommodation cancelled less than 3 days before departure: 100% of the booking value

    Pay up.
  • Thanks Boris,

Here is an extract from their Ts & Cs:

If you cancel any accommodation booking or Package Holiday booking you will also be required to pay a £40 cancellation fee to cover our administration costs, and any other cancellation fees that may be levied by the supplier(s) of your Arrangements. Both of your first and second deposits are non-refundable. Please note that once we have cancelled your booking, you will not be able to travel, even where we have collected the balance of the payments due from you and any cancellation fee.

I will await their reply - and then look at possible alternate options - including claiming on my Travel Insurance, excess fee depending (likely to be more).

    Thanks again, Paul
  • I'm presuming you didn't book the flight with Travel Republic? If not your insurance is unlikely to pay for your accommodation. The fact you're choosing to cancel would be classed as disinclination to travel. The accommodation is still available so I don't know how you'd get a refund for it.

What reply do you want from them. You have £40 to pay to cancel and you've paid £1. Another £39 is therefore due.
