Refund or replace on clothing

I purchased a dress at the beginning of May for my daughters wedding. It was an expensive Ted Baker dress from John Lewis. The dress was an investment and something i would wear on special occasions. What with one thing and another after coming back from the wedding in Florida the dress has been forgotten about and i'm only just getting round to having it dry cleaned. On getting the dress out of the bag i've noticed a seem around the waist band has split.
Ted Baker won't help as i didn't buy direct with them and John Lewis are refusing to help as it's more than 35 days since purchase.
Is there anything i can do or is it a case of just taking the loss?

Thanks
Cath x
