Create website links to internal network

I want to create a very simple web page (like a HUB) which allows users to access information and documents via links etc which is held in a controlled access folder on an internal network, held on other web pages. This is for a local organisation that I've recently joined.

This is to provide a One Stop Shop for people to access information rather than having loads of shortcuts and documents help on their desktops or in folders on their workstations.

The idea will hopefully ensure that everyone has the most up to date information, is working from the same data, and will save time as will mean people don't have to look through their own files/folder/old emails etc for the information.

What would be the simplest way of achieving this?

I don't currently write code other than VBA.

I've already created a simple HUB via Excel with buttons linking to the necessary data and to other sheets in the workbook which provide additional subject data, but the problem with this is that it's not completely safe and secure.

My idea is to create a simple web page to do the same thing.

I thought of just saving the excel workbook as a web page but I've discovered that the links to the other sheets within the same workbook don't work.

I'm happy to learn new skills including coding if absolutely necessary, but I'm convinced that there must be a simple way to do this (potentially via MS Office).

Anyone who can provide assistance with this? Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Depending on how the network is set up you just use drive letters or the UNC path.

ie Z:\docs\fred\stuff or \\server\docs\fred or even file://server/path/to/file.txt (this may or may not work outside of Internet Explorer) or I suppose you could do http://192.168.1.15/ if you set up a web server of some sort...

Just build them the same way as any other link - <a href="z:\docs\fred\stuff\childprotection.pdf">See Here for Child Protection Policy</a> for example. The only caveat with drive letters is that they need to be set up on all machines, so the UNC file path (\\server) may be quicker to implement...

Web pages (in their simplest format) need to be written in a language called HTML (like the tags in the post above). There are only a few tags needed to get to a basic working web page, and there are supporting languages called CSS (for formatting) and Javascript (for automation). All three languages can be edited as text files using Notepad or Wordpad. There are various other frameworks out there, but they will probably be overkill for what you want to do.

This is a very useful reference: https://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp

Do you really want to give outsiders access to your local network?

Why not just upload to google docs dropbox or similar?

Or is this just internal links to their own files on their own system? Just make shortcuts?

I got the impression that this was for internal use within the organisation.

Thats right it's just for internal use.

They have a problem with slow running PC's and a lot of it has to do with a lot of the !!!! people have left on the desktops over a period of time. Some of the shortcuts, files etc are useful to everyone, but not everyone has them, some of them are old versions of information that is no longer applicable or has been replaced.

As I said I have a excel based version of what I hope to create as a web page which is just buttons which link to the guidance either via hyperlink or macro.

I'm going to have a read through the info you kindly sent and see where I get to.
