Replacing edge of a door

I’m in the process of sorting out a door that has been badly chopped up to fit into a narrower than standard door frame.
It is a six panel internal door and the top half of the hinged edge is very thin wood with the screws in the top edge swinging around because they have virtually no wood to screw into.
My plan is the chisel out the almost paper thin wood, then glue in a strip of wood where the top hinge is. It appears to be what has been done for the bottom half of the door.
Apart from a full door replacement, is this the best way of resolving this issue?

I think you're right - carefully remove the old wood then glue a new piece in. I've had to do it occasionally when fitting non standard doors0
