glasses refund?

Varifocals have the three measurements- close work, computer and distance.

If there were only two measurements they would be bifocals.

I have worn varifocals for years and had no problems from the fIrst time I put them on but I do have a higher quality lens.

I do make sure the lens size is big enough to allow me to use them comfortably.

But my husband got a first pair last year and could not focus with them at all. he needed three pairs- reading, computer and distance.

The optician changed them for him free of charge

£178 for 2 pairs of varifocals (1 pair with transitions) is very very cheap! The truth with varifocals is you get what you pay for! At the price you paid you will have a very narrow intermediate and reading area and quite a bit of soft focus in the edges of the lens. I am of an age where I know I will need varifocals at my next eye test, and having worked in optics for many years will be choosing an varilux physio lens which will come at a much higher retail price than you paid - 2nd choice would be Zeiss superb (both brilliant lenses) but not cheap.

Although there are always some who don't get on with varifocals no matter how good the design. We are all different.

Thank you everyone. very grateful. I think the answer is to have my eyes tested again - at Asda because i am stuck with the glasses at the moment and get one reading and one long distance (not sure what happens about the middle one for computer use - will talk to optician obviously).........and wait until i am in a better financial position to get decent ones.

i totally agree with all of you that if you want good quality you have to pay for it. Loathe these glasses completely.

Not all optometrists take all 3 measurements. There is more of a difference between bifocals and varifocals. Bifocals will have a distinct second lens as part of the main lens. A varifocal will have various points of focus within the same smooth lens.

I did the same thing (not Carl Zeiss as far as I know, but the more expensive lenses in the range that was offered) and they have been wonderful. I think with varifocals you definitely get what you pay for and I wanted to improve my chances of adapting to these quickly. As soon as I put them on I knew they would be fine and I don't even think about them now. Love them.

I've just bought some new varifocal glasses from Specsavers and although I've worn varifocals for years with no problems I couldn't see properly with the new ones especially when reading unless I kept them pushed up to the top of my nose with my finger! After going back twice they said they were too big for me so I ordered another pair which are fine.
I asked for my old frames, which were not their own make, to be reglazed without transitional lens so I can wear them at my daughter's wedding in a few weeks only to be told this morning that they have broken them! They are offering me a free pair but not sure if they mean new frames or frames and lens. The original frames were by J F Rey and were very expensive. Am very upset as I loved them. Not sure what to ask for when I visit the shop as I need new ones in a hurry.

so sorry about your frames......surely as they broke your frames they will offer you a choice of new frames.....I hope so...and as your frames were expensive i hope you can take your pick.....I would expect to get both new frames and lenses and i think that is what you should ask them for.

I am sure you will look fab at the wedding...good luck - hope it all works out. Tell them how urgently you need them as well.

My first varifocals were the cheapest possible at Asda costing £40, I was nervous about adjusting to them, fortunately I took to them immediately. I'm sorry to hear you're having issues.

Collected them yesterday...hate them, hate them, hate them.....Told the lady in shop that even reading is blurred through the bottom part (bit clearer if i hold the glasses half way up my forehead

Sounds to me like a fitting problem if they are clearer if you push the specs up. 1 day is not enough time to evaluate a varifocal. My advice if you are not prepared to give it a really good go for one week to get them to exchange right now. You are correct you may need 3 pairs 1 for distance / 1 for near and 1 for VDU.

Although quite bizzare that a sight test was done on someone who might have had a retinal tear / detatchment a PVD in itself should not effect the prescription.

I don't think anything you have said indicates you need another sight test done just to either adapt to varfiocals / check the fitting or accept they aren't for you.

The NHS will not fund another sight test in this instance
