Low on memory

Recently my HP laptop reports that it's low on memory.

Stats:-

Intel core i3 403OU CPU @ 1.9GHz
RAM 8.00gb
64-bit OS x64-based processor

Is 8gb suddenly not enough? How does this transpire? Thanks

It appears when I open the laptop up from 'sleep' mode.

Can't recall the exact wording - it's along the lines of 'memory is low, please close all open programmes and browser' when nothing is open.

How often do you restart the laptop? Maybe you have a program which has a memory leak, thus eventually using up almost all the memory.

Or could the message be about the lack of free hard disk space?

As john says how often do you restart or shutdown,I wouldn't use sleep mode very often, it's ok for short periods but a daily shutdown is better, it has been reported that some programs don't respond well to sleep mode. If you look at task manager you may be surprised what is running when you think "nothing is open"

"Restart" or "Update and restart" if an update is pending.

No, message is not about lack of hard drive disk space, it's about low memory.

Could well be this as I tend to just 'sleep' my laptop rather than do a daily shutdown. Will change my habit now!

    Thanks for the advice.

Did you start Task Manager to look at the memory usage?

Don't know if this is related, but when you put a PC in hibernate mode, doesn't it page the RAM contents to the pagefile?

Maybe, when the PC comes out of hibernate mode, the OS tries to use the pagefile for the system before the pagefile has copied hibernate data back into RAM, thus causing the system to think that it has run out of virtual memory.

    Just a thought...?

The OP says it happens coming out of sleep and sfaik that doesn't write out memory to disk at all.

Yeah. I think "sleep" means "suspend to RAM" and "hibernate" means "suspend to disk".

But sleep and hibernate are often confused (or mistaken for synonyms).
