Next windows 10 major update-Will I need to install creators update first?

Hi folks,
I haven't had much luck on one of my computers with windows 10 creators update, freezing windows such as browsers so I uninstalled it, and everything went back to normal.
However it has downloaded version 1703 again but I seem to be stuck in an endless loop, with install stuck at 0% then all of a sudden installing something in a space of a few seconds to 100% and then going back to install again at 0%. Hard drive seems very busy throughout all this.
My question is will the next major update due in October I believe depend on me having the creators update installed first, or once its rolled out will it simply try to install itself, and ignore the creator update, that I am having not much luck with, computer was trying to install it for over an hour and a half with no sign of completion.
Thanks.

However it may take a while for the next version to be released and stable, so it may be worth trying to install the current Creators Update manually by downloading the installer before its current behaviour gets too annoying.
But first I would try the Windows Update Troubleshooter from here:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/10164/fix-windows-update-errors
Edit: I would also lie and tell it you have the latest version of Windows 10 (even though you haven't)!
It's also perhaps a good time to take a backup image of your computer in its current state (I use Macrium Reflect Free but other similar tools are out there) so you can get back to where you are now, if the update fails.0 -
One of the biggest issues with the updates is people assume its stuck and turn it off.
Often its in the middle of disk access so when it starts back up it needs to check the filesystem and retrace its steps and may even have to go back and restart the update so it takes even longer.
If it says its updating leave it on and go out or to bed etc.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Window seems to get itself really stuck at times, there is a fix posted on the web that involves nothing more complicated than deleting the Windows update cache and letting Windows start an update “from scratch” (sorry away from home using my phone, but a Google search will find it).
It cured a couple of laptops for me, they had been stuck at a few percent for hours.0 -
Yup, stop the BITS service and delete all the downloaded files then start again. Plenty of how-tos via Google.0

Thanks for all your replies.
Well I tried the windows update assistant and it completed the update ok, windows 10 seems to be running all right
I think I prefer the update assistant over windows update as it gives you more of a clue as to what is happening percentage wise.
On a side note, though my computer is seven and a half years old, (got it custom build, 4gb of ram, 32 bit windows so no point in upgrading it, and quad core cpu) its dual boot but seems to run a lot quieter on windows 7 than windows 10, not working as hard, with the noise of the fans etc.
Anyone else had this experience where your computer seems to run better on windows 7?
Thanks yet again.0 -
Well its hardly surprising that Windows 7 runs better on a seven year old computer as Windows 7 is, well, eight years old now. All operating systems are designed to run effectively on the hardware of the day, which is why 7 appears to absolutely fly on modern machines built in the last year or so.
But to answer the original question, all the updates are cumulative and it would have been possible to jump straight to the next big update even as far back as the original Windows 10 by going through the Update assistant. In theory Windows Update through 10 should just find the latest build of 10 and download that, but in practice it's far quicker just to use the Update Assistant.0
