Is £700 pcm too much for a house share?

  • About right.
You don't need to convince your dad of anything. If you're working, you're earning. As long as you are saving, sensible and not getting into debt you don't have to justify yourself to your parents.

Most places around SW zone 3 and 4 are about £700cpm.

I moved from Wandsworth town 3 bed flat sharing (clean but a bit tired) where rent was £387pcm to a place in Southfields in Jul-17, also 3 bed but much nicer where I now pay £490pcm - both properties the bills where excluded but are around £60pp pcm.

I am saving to buy my first home and therefore refuse to pay more than £500pcm in order to hit my target for my own place. Everyone is different. My search credentials have always been; housemates, cost, location. Some of my friends are happy to spend £900 to live in a beautiful property sharing with 1 other.

I lived in Tooting in 2013 in a 4 bed (only 4 of us). We each paid £320pcm and the house was so old and everything was broken, but all of us who lived there were on a mission to save money. We had the best time, loads of laughs and will be friends for life.

Think you need to decide what you want form the experience. There are cheaper house shares out there, but they won't be beautiful... Do you want to save money, or live in a great location in a nice place...

You are the one who will have to live there, not your dad. £700 sounds ok to me.

Thanks for all the comments everyone! I managed to convince my dad in the end and things worked out pretty well.

Amazing how many people have posted advice after this.

The price sounds fair, but now as K4yL5 says there are probably more important decisions to make, location , housemates etc etc

I think all your dad is saying is why spend £700 when you only need to spend £600 to rent a not so nice place. It's your money (presumably) so your decision.
    It's nothing , not nothink.
