Keeping money safe?

Apologies if this has been asked before! After the recent Northern Rock crisis, i would like to hear from experts/people here, how safe is your money now?
What happens if a bank closes down, i heard you get 100% of the first [SIZE=-1]£2000 and 90% of the next 31000 or something like that. Any one care to explain?
Furthermore, having money in a bank or building soc - is it the same? Building soc seem to pay better rates, but are they safe?
Sorry, if this is a really easy question, am new here.
Cheers!
