I have different suppliers for gas/leccy with a smart meter on the electric. If I get the gas moved, would I have a separate smart meter display? I’m guessing the answer is yes, in which case I won’t bother

Very few people on this forum.get excited about IHD's. Mine ended up in the back of a drawer after a week.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -

I am not aware of any supplier offering a smart meter just for a single fuel unless it is an electric only property. This situation could well change when SMETS2 meters are available which communicate with a central hub and not individual suppliers. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I can only speak for my own make/model of smart meters, but I believe they are pretty typical.
The electricity meter is the one that has all the connectivity built in, both to the supplier/DCC and to the IHD, the gas meter (where fitted) transmits a regular reading to the electricity meter, which stores and relays the data.
The gas meter is battery powered, which is why it's communication functions are so limited, there isn't the energy budget to have a persistent link to a dedicated or shared IHD.3.6 kW PV in the Midlands - 9x Sharp 400W black panels - 6x facing SE and 3x facing SW, Solaredge Optimisers and Inverter. 400W Derril Water (one day). You have to wonder - with the virtually unlimited financial budget available for the Smart Meter programme - why some bright spark didn't decide to spec gas smart meters with an inbuilt miniaturised CCGT generator to keep the batteries charged and have all the energy budget they wanted"In the future, everyone will be rich for 15 minutes"0 -

My gas meter wheezes enough as it is, I wouldn't want it to whistle too!
It did occur to me that some sort of mechanical generator that uses the gas flow (the same way the bellows in the meter turn the counter) could possibly work, but then you risk people with low usage having their meter go dumb randomly3.6 kW PV in the Midlands - 9x Sharp 400W black panels - 6x facing SE and 3x facing SW, Solaredge Optimisers and Inverter. 400W Derril Water (one day).
