AVG paid protection

I currently have the paid version of AVG on my laptop. It has worked ok and i haven't had any virus/privacy problems but AVG keeps flashing up warnings in the corner of my screen to 'warn' me that I need extra cover. eg. claims that my internet provider can see my data or that my IP address is visible to others. If i click on the option, AVG offers extra products for more money.
I suspect that it is just a money grabbing ploy and i am getting fed up with it .
Is there anything in their claims? I am thinking of not renewing in December and finding an alternative but perhaps they all do the same?

    Money grabbing ploy. It wants you to sign up to its paid for VPN service.

    If you're a tin foil hatter they have a point. Without using a VPN the ISP can see what data you're sending, what websites you visit and your real IP address is visible to the internet. Funnily enough though, in this country at least unless you're doing anything illegal or you're a corporation with really sensitive information its not really a problem. I could see a need to use a VPN as a normal everyday thing to do in countries with some less than friendly regimes but not the UK.

    Uninstall AVG at you earliest oppertunity and install yourself bitdefender free.

    AVG is absolute garbage. I recently fixed a machine that was running like treacle, it had AVG installed, along with 200+ threats (trojans, shady reg keys etc) ..

    AVG is not worth a carrot

    AVG= snake oil
  • Don't!!!!

    There are loads of free software that'll do everything your paid version of AVG will do

  • I just use the Windows firewall/Microsoft Security Essentials and don't download junk on dodgy websites.

    I used to use cracked versions of AVs for years until they became too much of a hassle. Not to mention all the bloat that usually comes with modern internet security now.
  • In case you hadn't noticed, any time anyone mentions anti-virus, posts 3 to 6 appear automatically. They're as predictable as death and taxes.

    It generally takes a little longer for someone to point out that if you use linux, you don't need antivirus. Watch this space.
  • I uninstalled AVG because of this. I've been using Macafee since and it's very good - no warnings or anything. Not sure I completely trust free software, but that's probably unfounded.

  • Interesting to read this. Used to use the free AVG but a couple of years ago they scared me into having their paid for Internet Security. I am now sick of it because they constantly tell me I am not secure, despite that they say they are keeping me safe with their program. I am glad to know others find many free ones secure. Are these mentioned here safe for financial transactions?

    You had the free AVG then rather than the paid one? MacAfee isn't free is it?
