Cabot Financial response to Prove it

Morning everyone, apologies if this is in the wrong section.
I received a letter around a month ago from Cabot Financial claiming that a credit card debt was owed. I responded to them asking for them to prove it.
Today i received a response, saying the amount is still outstanding and a copy of the original credit agreement.
I am not disputing that I had the credit card, just that I had an outstanding amount.
On checking my bank statements payments to the card ceased at the start of 2015. Cabot have recorded a default on my credit file of late 2016 - surely the default should have been recorded sooner if this was the case?
How should i respond to there payment demands?
All help greatly appreciated

If you dispute you had defaulted, then you should ask for evidence of the amount paid.
If you agree you defaulted and think the default should be applied earlier, then ask that it is moved to within 6 months of the default date.0 -
I dispute that I defaulted
Also no default was showing prior to Cabot taking the account and wouldnt I have been showing as defaulted with the OC?0 -
You could be defaulted by either owner - but not both. And ideally, within 6 months of the default.0

I had a similar encounter recently, albeit with nearer dates - I had a cc which I stopped using in 2014, and earlier in the summer I was contacted to say I had defaulted and it turned out on careful examination that an annual dd went through as late as April '17 and that as a result of my switching current accounts, the outstanding amount was not paid... I guess what I am saying is that I was very clear that I didn't owe anything on that account, but it turned out that I had not taken all the circumstances into account...0

You could ask for statements, since you know what you paid. It would at least show what the debt comprises of0
