Horizontal Flue - Why?

On our regular bus journey we had some fun spotting a flue, that looked like a telescope.
When we finally worked out it wasnt a telescope, the question is, why the horizontal flue?
All other flues and chimnies point towards the sky, why is this flue horizontal?

more details please, but it could be a ventilation flue, not a heat flue.
Most flues go up because they take work by using the draw of warm air wanting to rise, but if you are venting a bathroom, or a cooker hood with a fan, the up bit isn't important.0 -

I cannot see very much on streetview, it looks like an older photo of a vent pipe.

Some manufacturers allow it, Worcester definitely do. Don’t know why you’d do it other then the horizontal flue is cheaper then a vertical flue.0

If it's a concentric flue for a gas boiler, then I would think that a horizontal section would reduce the chance of the boiler filling up with rainwater. A lot of boilers suck clean air through the flue as well as venting out the burnt gases. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -

The flue is on the roof, so it looks odd, it would not look out of place on a wall.0 -
Could it possibly be a bathroom or en-suite extractor vent? That's what it looks like to me. I think it's unlikely to be vent for a heating appliance.0

It probably is a boiler flue, it’s fairly common, horizontal flue out of a pitched roof, I’ve never done it myself and don’t see why you would other then cost.0
