Two theft claims and can't get house insurance - Help!

My shed got broken into in 2015, my house then got broken into in 2017. Both times I claimed on my insurance.

I am now coming to renew and everyone keeps saying they cant quote me due to my claims history - 2 claims in 3 years.

Really unsure what I am now meant to do as I obviously want my buildings an contents covered.

Any help?

  • Try and get cover excluding theft.
  • Try a local insurance broker maybe (assuming you are currently either going direct or using price comparison sites)?
  • Was using comparison sites which is really annoying, because they all give me quotes, I can continue through to their sites and details are all correct. It then stalls at the last minute either saying it cant be completed or to call. When I call they run through all the details and then get to the end and say they cant quote. Seriously annoying. They may as well flag it as soon as I put the claim details in rather than going through everything else.
  • Similar thing happens after a subsidence claim which the insurer repaired to 'the correct standards'. Now I can't get insured with anyone except the original insurer at a grossly inflated premium; not even for contents; total scam. There should be a law against it.

As someone suggested you might have to get cover but excluding any more claims for theft.
  • Could you remain with your current insurer? How does the renewal premium compare to previous year's.

Why is it a scam? Why should a commercial company offer a product they would more than likely take a loss on? You don't have a right to insurance.

Why? These are private companies, if they don't want your business, how is that their issue?

Or the OP could get better security after the first theft??? Insurers don't have to cover you, you don't have to have good security, just expect to be broken into every now and then

My dad had a house burglary, improved the doors and window security significantly with metal reinforcements as well. Cheaper than being burgled again and raising premiums

These are private companies who have to make money as well, they are not a charity

    Hi,

One other thing to consider is that you MIGHT now be caught by the question:

"Have you ever been refused insurance"

I think this would be the case if your current insurer is refusing to cover you?

That is absolutely the case. But the problem you are experiencing is mainly due to the way insurance risk is assessed. It's done more on an individual basis rather than a collective basis as in years gone by.

To be honest I agree with the OP it is a scam, basically it's collective tactics to try and persuade you not to claim.
If I make a claim this year and then find I need to claim again , then I am left in a dilema, either suck it up or claim and risk not being able to get insurance again in the future.

I realise it's their business who they do business with but the whole industry is increasing initial policy price based upon individual risk as apposed to collective risk and then putting more and more obstacles in the way of claims. Meanwhile the industry is one of the biggest industries in the world, making the biggest profits. the insurance industry is the basis that all big business in the world is built on.

That said the OP should try a broker, there will be someone out there who will insure you, but at what cost that's another matter.
