Stopping someone getting a credit card at my address

I'm new on here so this question may have already been asked but i need help quickly!
I have someone loving at my address who isout of work but has managed to get a credit card under my address!
How can I stop them getting more cards? I'm worried that no payment of the cards will result in me being black listed when I've done nothing wrong!!
He's not on any bills other than the council tax which I pay.
Please someone help.

  • If they are living at your address and are over 18, then they are entitled to apply for credit in their own name.

There is no such thing as a "black list". Credit reference agencies store data by reference to people, not addresses. People can be linked financially if you share loans etc., and occasionally there can be mistakes over names etc. The best you can do is to check your own CRA reports to see that they correctly represent your situation and that there aren't any linkages that shouldn't be there.

If you don't trust this person, then you need to be sure that they are not applying for credit in your name. If they do, then depending how you feel, you need to call the police. All very unlikely, but it has happened before. Oh and in this case you probably don't want them living with you anyway!

What I don't understand is how he's managed to get one card that I know of without having any income! Do these companies not check!!

  • Experian, Call Credit and Equifax are the main ones. You can google them for more information. You are entitled to a statutory report for £2. OR, you can generally sign up to some kind of service where they give you a free report including score, but then they start billing you if you don't cancel.

The "score" is pretty pointless - lenders score according to what the CRAs report as well as what is no the application. It's the information on the report that is important. With my Barclaycard, I get my Experian "score" free of charge, but it is only the number, not the report. So not very useful.

As per your earlier question, IF they can verify someone's address (eg on electoral roll for a while) and there is no negative information reported (defaults on loans, CCJs etc), then people can usually get a certain amount of credit. Eg a so-called "sub-prime" card with a low limit. People sometimes lie about their income. Income and employment status is often taken on trust in the absence of any conflicting information or negative information.

MSE Credit Club, Noddle, and Clearscore all have a free product which shows most of the info on your credit file. No need to pay for any 'enhanced' services.

    Who is this person?

Are they living or loving, or both?

If they're applying in their own name, there's nothing you can do, or worry about for that matter.

Your credit history is linked to individuals, not addresses.

If they're applying in your name? That's fraud and should be dealt with accordingly.

As for how/why they're getting credit? Frankly it's none of your business. Would you want the person living with you scrutinising your finances? No? Then don't do so on their behalf. **

** Unless if this person is more than a lodger, but you're unclear on this point.

Basically it's none of your business. it's his home too so he is entitled to live in it and live a normal life doing so. That includes getting credit cards and loans just like every body else.

If you don't like it then you need to ask him to leave and stop letting out your room.
