Electric Oven Replacement - Wiring query

Hi,

We have a low rated single electric fan oven which has died.

It has an ordinary plug which goes into an ordinary style socket. Above it is a "fused" switch at worktop level which can be used to isolate (switch off) the electrics just to the oven.

When we moved in around 10 years ago we had various quotes for kitchen and oven and some electricians said we might need a new supply with its own circuit at the main fuse board. We DON'T currently have a separate circuit/switch at the fuse board for the oven.

My questions are:
What is the maximum wattage rated oven we can buy with a plug on that we can simply replace without having to have new wiring and consumer board work done?

Is a "Pyrolytic" oven likely to be rated too high, given that it can reach massive temperatures for cleaning purposes?

Many thanks for any clarification on this.

3 KW in theory, assuming it's a standard 13-amp socket. Though if you've got other sockets on the same circuit that are also drawing a current at the same time, you may find the breaker for that circuit starts tripping.

I don't know about the "Pyrolytic" ovens - but when you're looking at any electrical appliance, it's maximum wattage should be clearly labelled. If it's more than 3KW then you're going to need a suitably rated circuit put in.

    this is correct

looking at a well know electrical place, single ovens are often 13 amp rated

  • Hi both

Many thanks for the helpful replies. Unfortunately the oven I had my eye on I've just found out has a 16A rating, so I guess that would be unsafe for the set up I currently have?

    Will continue looking...

Are you talking about an oven, or a cooker (oven and hob)?
With the latter, you can apply diversity to calculate the maximum load.

yep definitely BS7671 says that any oven over 2kw should be fitted to a dedicated circuit of the appropriate rating.

No diversity on a first ring 40% on any subsequent rings. You can apply diversity to a dedicated oven circuit
