Cancellation?

Hello, This is my first post guys!
My car recently broke down so i contacted my insurer asking them to cancel my policy (thinking i could save some monies as the plan was to just get rid of the car at this point) they said they could give me two weeks for me to add a new car to the policy.
During these two weeks we decided to get the car fixed by a relative and keep the car as finding a new car was going to take a bit longer than expected! So I contacted my insurer and explained car is sorted so i would like to keep it on the policy and carry on as normal.. the insurer told me they would need proof that the car was road worthy and they would give me an extra 7 days to do this.
I didn't respond to them within the 7 days due to personal issues and they cancelled my policy, when i spoke to the insurer they said i would from now on need to declare i have an insurance policy cancelled, which seemed really unfair,I understand i should of responded within 7days, but now they have left me in a really difficult position, i was reading up about cancelled policy and other insurers see you as a risk when you've had a policy cancelled and dont want to provide cover, also main reason policies get cancelled is due to no keeping up with payments or not disclosing endorsements.
Is there anything i can do to reverse this cancellation? This has really worried and upset me I have recently purchased a new car which I need to insure and i dont know what to do.
