replacement key/fob for a 1999 Ford Focus

Recently bought a 1999 Ford Focus, but it only came with one remote/key fob. However, as I am so clumsy, I am likely to lose this and then will be carless and stuck!! Is there any way I can get a new remote that won't cost me the earth (as Ford seem to charge a small fortune), or is it possible to clone the remote that I have? I understand that it is possible to get an uncut key with remote and program this- can I do this using the remote I already have or does it need to be the master key (which I unfortunatley don't have)?
Please help
Many thanks

you need 1 key to be able to tune it into the remote system but 2 to code it to the immobiliser I think. The instructions are in the manual how to do it so you can clarify at least

Try a Google search for Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) - Fords immobiliser key & transponder chip system. It should give details on how to program the car's system to recognise new transponder chips.

The Focus owners club website should also have details.

It does involve lots of key swapping and - in my experience - never works first time.

Any new key should also be "cut" to manually open the doors. Why not just get a basic "non-remote" key & transponder chip as a spare and to give to garages when being serviced, etc.

ISTR that Ford don't do the red "master" keys anymore - they were just red anyway.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)
  • Ford did away with the red key system around 1998.

A new remote key for a mondeo, cut, chipped and tuned cost me about £80 from a Ford dealer.

But I'd personally just get a manual key. Which is cheaper. Which is MoNeY SaViNg.!.!.!
