Today the CAA has stated "The CAA will take views for the next seven days before deciding whether to press ahead with action." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-41422571

It appears they want to hear views https://www.caa.co.uk/Our-work/About-us/Contact-us/

Ryanair have proved themselves totally incompetent and it's time to pull the licenses that let them fly to/from UK airports.

A penalty should also be imposed forcing them to pay a minimum of double the ticket price for the cancelled flights and just because it's their style of doing business a minimum of ten times the price of any extras that could have been accrued if the flights had not been cancelled (boarding pass charges at the airport, seat allocation etc.)
  • I had a return from Stansted to Glasgow for a weekend in February.

Got the email yesterday saying it was cancelled and giving me the link to either get a refund or rebook.

My initial thought was rebook but I then found out the entire route is gubbed until April, so applied for the refund.

Now I’m finding out they’re supposed to rebook you through different airlines?

If I book easyJet flights would Ryanair be forced to pay me the difference?

Advice is not to take the refund. Get them to rebook you on an alternative.

Not now you've accepted the refund, no.

The Civil Aviation Authority is taking enforcement action against Ryanair under Section 214 of the Enterprise Act 2002 for misleading passengers on cancelled flights about their rights under Article 8(1) of Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 to be rerouted on a rival airline at Ryanair's expense.

Regulation 5(4)(k) of the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 prohibits misleading a consumer about "the consumer’s rights or the risks he may face". This is an offence under Regulation 9, punishable under Regulation 13 by a fine and/or up to two years' imprisonment. Can we look forward to O'Leary being given a prison sentence in view of Ryanair misleading passengers before enforcement action was taken?
  • I'm in a similar situation, I got the email on Thursday saying could only get a refund or booked on another ryanair flight (there is no alternative for where we were going) and so took the refund and booked flights with Easyjet (£100 more). This is for xmas and I was in such a panic about being able to get alternative flights. But had ryanair told me that they had to book us on an alternative carrier I would have made them do it and pay the extra cost. I know it won't be as much as others have lost out on, but I'm so angry with Ryanair at not giving people the correct info about their options and I want to make them pay for the extra cost - do I just write to the complaints address in the article? It doesn't look like this scenario is covered under EU261, but had I not been given misleading info in the first place I would have made them book the flights to pay for the additional cost!!! Any advice gratefully received.

No harm in trying. Briefly explained you booked alternative flights before the announced they would offer rebooking on other airlines and claim the difference back.
  • Michael O’Leary went to a pub and asked for a pint of Guinness.

The barman nodded and said, "That will be £1 please, Mr. O’Leary."

Somewhat taken aback, O'Leary replied, "That's very cheap," and handed over his money.

"Well, we do try to stay ahead of the competition", said the barman. "And we are serving free pints every Wednesday from 6 pm until 8 pm. We have the cheapest beer in England".

"That is remarkable value", Michael comments.

"I see you don't seem to have a glass, so you'll probably need one of ours. That will be £3 please."

    O'Leary scowled, but paid up.

He took his drink and walked towards a seat. "Ah, you want to sit down?" said the barman. "That'll be an extra £2. You could have pre-booked the seat, and it would have only cost you £1."

"I think you may be too big for the seat sir, can I ask you to sit in this frame please".

Michael attempts to sit down but the frame is too small and when he can't squeeze in, he complains "Nobody would fit in that little frame".

"I'm afraid if you can't fit in the frame you'll have to pay an extra surcharge of £4 for your seat sir".

O'Leary swore to himself, but paid up. "I see that you have brought your laptop with you" added the barman. "And since that wasn't pre-booked either, that will be another £3."

O'Leary was so incensed that he walked back to the bar, slammed his drink on the counter, and yelled, "This is ridiculous, I want to speak to the manager".

"I see you want to use the counter," says the barman, "that will be £2 please."

O'Leary's face was red with rage. "Do you know who I am?"

"Of course I do Mr. O'Leary."

"I've had enough! What sort of pub is this? I come in for a quiet drink and you treat me like this. I insist on speaking to a manager!"

"Here is his e-mail address, or if you wish, you can contact him between 9.00 am and 9.01am every morning, Monday to Tuesday at this free phone number. Calls are free, until they are answered, then there is a talking charge of only £1 per second, or part thereof".

"I will never use this bar again".

"OK sir, but do remember, we are the only pub in England selling pints for £1."
  • Love it. :rotfl::T

I nominate jack_pott for the most hilarious post of the year on MSE.

    (That'll be £5, thanks).
