Posh Vanilla Extract £4 at Lakeland

Madagascan Bourbon Vanilla Extract: really potent stuff for cooks/baking enthusiasts. Nothing like that poncey vanilla essence or vanilla flavouring. I saw it last week in Tesco and Sainsbury's Savacentre for £7.99 (though for online shopping both have it for £5.99) and then grabbed myself a bargain when I found it in Lakeland for £4. Quite a big bottle so lasts ages. Think this is a long term offer at Lakeland, instore and online.

Whispers "it's got alcohol in it" - look at this from the label:
Finest Quality Since 1907.
Vanilla, the most popular flavour in the world, originated in Mexico. Brought to Europe about 1520 by the explorer Cortez, it was first used only in conjunction with cacao beans in a drink called Chocolati. Since 1602 it has been enjoyed as a flavour by itself.
Grown mainly in Madagascar and Indonesia, as well as other minor areas, the vanilla bean, or pod, is the only edible fruit-bearing orchid. Each flower, openonly one day a year, must be hand pollinated to produce a pod which requires a labour intensive 3-6 month curing process to develop full flavour. About 5 pounds of harvested pods produce only 1 pound of cured pods.
Our exclusive cold process method extracts the essence from selected vanilla pods, the finest obtainable, producing rich and delicious flavour that is unsurpassed. Use and enjoy! Alcohol 35%. :D

Its in the catalogue so it must be a permanent price. I've been trying to find excuses not to buy it though, as I would obviously have to buy something else to get free postage. ;)

It is the dog's doodahs as well - I live near their flagship Windermere store, and know it used to be much more than that. I got some last time and have used it in things from muffins to caramel shortbread and it really does make the essence/flavouring thing seem a waste of time!

thanks for this info! I just looked in the cupboard and my last bottle of this from Lakeland is almost finished so will go and get another one. It is excellent stuff -and lasts for ages as you don't need to use much - and at £4 a bottle it's a steal :)
  • thanks 4 that I love this stuff and it's normally really expensive

£4 is a good price, especially from Lakeland who were citing vanilla crop failures and charging about £15 less than a year ago.
