i know it is a stupid question but during the night and when not in use can i turn my modem off to save electricity? or will it cause problems?
we finally got connected to the net today and the engineer was a bit of a cowboy. he was initially wanting to take the cable through the front bedroom to get it to the back bedroom because he didnt want to take the carpet up on the stairs. i thought duh! like there isnt a carpet in the front bedroom. i managed to get him to take it up the stairs. while he connected the modem he didnt connect it to the pc. he just said you have to install this cd. i was left with two cables a usb cable and a ethernet cable. so i was thinking ok which do i use. after working out it was the ethernet i then read in the instruction booklet another way to get the pc online without the cd. so i was wondering which to do, thanks to him going without explaining what to do. he gave me a pin number but no serial number which i discovered i needed. to get that i had to call them on a 25p a minute phone number. anyway thats all sorted now i just wanted to rant a bit.
so back to the point of the thread. can i turn the modem off and should i?

You can and you should, to save power. It only take a minute to connect when you switch back on.0 -

I have an anti surge switched 4 way socket that turns everything of when I turn of the computer, modem, speakers and screen and turns everything back on when you start the computer. The modem turns on and boots up faster than the computer when I turn it back on.The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

thanks everyone. as well as the power saving i was also worried that if it was on people could hack in in the middle of the night without me knowing.0

If your PC is switched off what are they going to hack into? I turn everything off at the mains at night unless I'm downloading a large file or something. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0
