British Gas Homecare - Can't clear outstanding balance

Options
I cancelled my Homecare agreement at the end of June as I was moving to a new home with a brand new heating system so no longer required it.

I was led to believe I was due a refund and even received a letter at the start of July indicating as such. I still hadn't received the refund so called them the other day to enquire about this. They told me that I wasn't due a refund and in fact had an outstanding balance.

I called them back today as even though it's a small amount (£6.24), I thought it's better to clear this balance than leave it with me owing them money. I've spoke to a few different departments and because the account is now closed, they cannot take a payment from me. They've told me if they want the money, the collections department will send me an invoice.

I'm also having issues with Royal Mail not redirecting all of my mail so I'm concerned that they do send me an invoice, it's not redirected and they then leave a negative mark on my credit file. Are they likely to chase for £6? Frustrating not being able to pay it.

When I receive my cheque book, I may just send them a cheque for the balance anyway with my homecare number on the back.

Not so much chasing you as some robot just adding an outstanding, unpaid note to your credit file leaving you unknowingly screwed for 6 years

Try hard to just get it paid off, perhaps include a covering letter in with the cheque?

Yeah, that's what I plan to do.

Send it first class with free proof of postage from the post office.
