I'm no sure i'd be happy making an unprotected payment to someone who is happy to avoid paying commission that he's agreed to as part of his deal with tripadvisor or whoever. When I rented an apartment out, I factored these costs into the price, as he should. Wants his cake and eat it it seems, with you taking the risk.
Fine if this sort of thing doesn't bother you.
Actually if you are renting via TA, then you are paying the commission not the person letting the place.
For example my highest week is £800, yet you rent via TA you will pay £900 - I will pay about £30!

I agree with what you are saying Mark but as a cottage owner with trip advisor they charge owners too, for them its win win, they charge bookers and owners, I think its 3% for owners so much less than home away, owners direct and booking.co, that charge us 10-15% if i remember correctly.
I must say most of our guests book directly and pay into my bank, we've done it that way for the last 7 years.Owner of a cute cottage in the North York Moors :j0 -
Just how trustworthy is Trip Adviser? How many reviews are posted by family, friends and the landlord himself. Someone who is happy to swindle the site which brings him business - how can you trust them not to swindle you?
No protection paying with PP through "family & friends" and check with PP if there is any for holiday accommodation - I suspect it would be seen as a service rather than a product.0
