I was fortunate to switch to the new cheapest supplier but was surprised that the smart meter I have cannot be transferred If EDF want to get the reading electronically they will have to replace the meter. Its hard to believe that in this day and age there is no way the readings cannot be re-directed.

SMETS1 Enrolment and Adoption

DCC also made good progress towards
developing solutions to support the Enrolment
and Adoption of SMETS1 meters. DCC is
managing a programme to consider how first
generation SMETS1 meters can be enrolled into
its infrastructure which will allow energy
suppliers and other authorised parties to
communicate with both SMETS2 and SMETS1
meters via DCC systems.

In 2016, DCC undertook important work
engaging with industry, leading to an Initial
Enrolment Project Feasibility Report (IEPFR) in
November 2016. The public consultation for the
report closed in January 2017. The IEPFR
outlining enrolment options is due to be
published later in 2017.

There is a lot more to the smart meter project than re-directing meter readings to individual suppliers so that we all get bills based on actual readings; hence, the need for a central communications hub that can pass on all consumption data to interested parties such as the National Grid. A smart Grid requires smart solutions to match energy demand with supply. A great chunk of every bill is paying generators on a 'just in case' basis. Sadly, rather than educate, Gaz and Leccy has been pitched at a very low intellectual level (no doubt at great cost).
