My partner sold his car last year, he has a works vehicle which he uses to and from work and other times he uses my car (he's a named driver on the insurance).
He doesn't want to loose his NCD, which I believe will be valid 2 years. If he were to purchase another car, could he keep it for just a short period (say 3 months) in order for his NCD to be valid for another 2 year from the date the car was subsequently sold?

Yes . (Sounds an expensive exercise!)

Another tried and tested route is to alternate who insures your car each year

So there's no minimum period he has to have the policy in order to maintain the NCD for another 2 years?

Yes there will be a minimum period, but that depends on the insurer. One insurer may say you have only been insured for 1 month so will not provide an additional proof of your no claims.

Hand you back a copy of the proof you gave them. But insuring a car that wont be used is likely to be costly. Short term policies are expensive also.

3 months insurance with the cancellation fee could be more than a full years premium.

When your insurance runs out simply use his NCD to insure your car for the year. Then the following year swap back to yours.

Just remember to answer the question of who the registered keeper and owner is and who the main driver is.

Thanks for your reply forgotmyname. Anyone know what the minimum period is in order to keep the NCD?

Ask the company you intend on using. Every company will have their own terms.
