Advice needed: 2 car insurance

I need some advice. I have a car which is in my name and insured as me for main driver and my husband for additional driver. We have decided to get rid of his car and he will take over mine and I will buy another car..... BUT.... the policy for my car is up until Feb 2018 and if I make any changes to it there is a fee of £98 plus additional payments for him.

So here is my question.... shall I leave it as it is... get my new car (registered in my name) and put the new cars insurance in my husbands name with me as the main driver/2nd driver.... we both have over 10 years no claims so that shouldnt matter.... If I put the insurance in my name I need to transfer over my no claims (to keep cost down) which means I will have to alter my old cars insurance and incur charges.... This way we will be driving each others insured car.... mine in his name and his in my name? would there be a problem with that if we both listed as drivers?

You need to make sure whoever is the main driver of the vehicle is noted as being the main driver on the insurance.

If you buy a second car, and want to use your NCB on it, you will need to cancel the insurance for the first car. Although you can change who the main driver is on a policy, you can't change the policyholder.
  • Hi thanks for your reply. What I am saying is.... as husband and wife.... we both have cars with fully comp insurance and both of us are named drivers on each others cars.... but if we decide to drive each others cars (permanent swap) it shouldnt be a problem... we shouldnt have to change the policies to say we swapped cars should we.... changing the policies incurs charges and if we are named drivers on each others it should be ok...is what i am asking

It depends on what you were asked when you took the policy out. Some ask if the car is owned by you or your spouse.

You need to advise on any changes to what you originally declared.

Yes its OK to be named and main drivers on each others policies. So he buys the new car and insures it in his name with you as the main driver. But you still need to change the details on YOUR policy to say he is now the main driver which will attract an admin fee.

Then the question of insuring the new car. He will be asked if he is the registered owner. Will he be the registered owner of the new car, with you as the main driver?

You need to check each policy wording - some insurers do insist that the policyholder is also the main driver.

Another thing to be wary of is the class of use each driver has on each car.

For example, on my husband's car, he as policyholder is insured for commuting to work, but I as additional driver am only insured for "social, domestic and pleasure" (the standard wording for not commuting or driving on work business). If we swapped cars and I started going to work in it, I wouldn't be insured.

May not be relevant but worth checking what classes of use you each have on each policy, as well as the issues outlined above re the policyholder being the main driver.
