Where do I stand?

I recently bought a full bathroom suite from soak.com, having had the full bathroom fitted it turns out that the shower tray is faulty. The design of the shower tray is so it pretty much level with the floor and we have an open enclosure as per the design of the shower tray. All the pictures on soak.com's website show the same style enclosure or even more open than the one we have, the return on the tray is such that the water should fall back into the waste without requiring a lip like traditional shower trays have. Therein lies the problem the shower tray does not have the correct fall and as it's an open enclosure the water inevitably pours out of the opening every time the shower is used. Soak have said they will replace the shower tray but as yet are refusing to pay any 3rd party costs involved with having it rectified. Any idea where I stand with this one?

    That is the risk you take when you buy fixtures and fittings yourself and get a fitter in to fit it. If the fitter had supplied it then he would have had to re-fit it at his own cost.

    It is often cheaper to buy them yourself but if they are faulty then it can cost more than the money you save.

    If so my guess is its the fitters fault not the tray, these need to be fitted oversize, with mm precision, and adequate support throughout, fail on any one of them and its a total write off.

    And if that's the case, they are being generous.

    Was it the fitter who said it was the trays fault?

    I agree with both of the above. It's a case of either/or.

    Your fitter really needed to check the fall on the tray. You'd do it anyway, but on something like that you'd check and check again. But then he didn't buy it, so there is nothing built into his costs for failure.

    The thing with either/or scenarios is that you're stuck with the bill as no one is responsible for it. I'm sure soak.com will be quite explicit that they won't pay for fitting costs.

    Pay for supply and fit and you're covered either way. Save the money by buying your own and that's the risk you take. Much of the time it works, sometimes it doesn't.

  • I work for a a bathroom distributor and handle the majority of complaints we receive. 9 times out of 10 the problem is due to incorrect fitting and the fitter will generally blame the product. Fitters often don't read the fitting instructions and miss vital information as they've fitted hundreds of trays before and believe that they're all the same.

    The tray may not be level so the water isn't running back to the waste or it may not be the correct waste for the tray, i.e. it's not allowing the water to run away quickly enough. It may be worthwhile finding out who the tray manufacturer is and seeking guidance from them. They will probably have had experience of this problem and be able to advise on the best course of action. A replacement tray fitted by the same fitter may just end up with the same problem as the original tray.

    Yes it is a slim line tray. To be honest Soak have been really good and have spoken to my bathroom fitter who in turn has spoken to their technical team and it does appear to be a fault with the tray. They have referred it back to the manufacturer for advice. So far I've been really impressed with their customer service.
  • Agree, the fitter should have read the instructions and advised you before they fitted it. I would call them and explain the issue and request they come back and rectify it.
