Have a lovely new car - it's awesome.

One pesky issue though - on turning on the ignition the radio automatically comes on. The manual notes this is a 'helpful' feature and vehicle specific forums have noted that it cant be turned off.

Its a petty little thing but its really starting to irritate me as I have the volume up as I Bluetooth my audiobook through the media centre and invariably leave it up when I get out of the car.

I have tried to remind myself to turn down the volume so I don't get startled to death when the radio blares out unexpectedly. However even scaring myself silly several days on the trot hasn't conditioned me to remember to turn down.

So in an effort to get round this small first world problem - anyone know a silent radio station? I did have it on classical so a least I wouldn't get a roaring rock tune and they happened to have a big brass band thunderclap this morning just as is started the car.

:D
Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...

I didn't mention the car model or make as the specific forums for the car state the helpful feature cant be turned off.

On discussing with a few of my co workers this morning its seems to be quite common across several makes

Can you tune it to a frequency which isn't being used to broadcast?

On an older car it would have been simple just to install a temporary switch on the power supply wire, but I guess on modern cars this would probably invalidate the warranty and activate a sea of warning lights and error codes?

But others seeing this post might find it helpful to know? It might be a cross in the box when choosing their next card.

Another way round it might be to select a different input source before you switch off so that becomes what is selected on start up - my car (Fiesta) has USB input so you could plug in an empty USB stick if your car has this feature (we don't know because you won't tell us...).

Does your car not default to the same audio source? That would be the 'helpful' feature. Not defaulting to turning the radio on at whatever volume it was.

This feature should be able to be coded out - but as I don't know what make and model of car it is I can't help any further. :(

The stereo will have 2 power inputs, one when the ignition is off and one when its on.

Simply remove the power feed from the ignition. Stereo still powers on but will not automatically come on with the ignition.

  • You could try popping the radio out and playing around with the wirirng at the back of the unit. You can pick up those tools pretty cheap online. Might be able to reset a default setting
  • Is it Audi?

I switch to source of audio that's empty (in my case Jukebox) and it sorts the problem. Quite annoying that it can't stay off when you switch it off earlier.
