Seal round bath leaking

The bathroom is 18 years old and has lasted well but the seal round the top of the bath is now leaking (the chipboard floor underneath is soaking wet so its probably been like that for a while)

The seal is a bit like this link here that sits underneath the bottom row of tiles - I think its worn and is leaking underneath as its very brittle and uneven now. Ive sealed the top with silicone but its still leaking somewhere along its length

Anyway, I am looking to get a man in to redo the whole bathroom early 2018 so am looking for a quick and easy fix/seal - does anyone recommend simply finding a larger seal and just plonking it over the top or even trying to hack off this existing bit of plastic completely and using silicone for the 1cm gap? As I said, I am looking for a simple fix to last 3 months before I rip it out proper.

Many thanks in advance.

I suspect that whatever you do will probably open up at some point. At least silicone has some flexibility in it.

The problem will be the floorboards. If they are soaking, there will be movement in the floor which will cause movement between the bath and the tiles which are still fixed. You almost want something tall that attaches to the bath and allows a bit of movement against the wall whilst stopping spills going over. If you attach something to the wall or try to attach to both, the bath will still move and cause a split.

A you will doing up the bathroom in the future,i would lift the seal where it contacts the bath with something tha will not damage the bath or the seal, clean between the two surfaces then fill with silicon, might not lookpretty but if it stops water leaking it solves the problem

Thanks for the advice so far,

I am planning on taking out the bath and installing a shower cubicle thing so pretty much everything at fault here including bath and tiles are all being replaced hence my quest for a temporary solution
  • If you clean the tiles and the bath gaffer tape will work. A cheap shower curtain held up with string in front of the leaking wall would also work.
  • I made a 'temporary' fix with Low Allergy Perforated Tape over a shower tray where the seal had gone. Despite it being perforated it hasn't let any water through, it doesn't show and has been in place for six months awaiting a new bathroom. :j
