Words fail me, Z! I definitely preferred the lightpull :)

I can't seem to be able to get a decent lightpull. And now the string has fallen out of the electrical point in the ceiling ... sigh ...

Well a light pull all depends on what you're wanting from it. The heavy ceramic ones don't work well with stretchy string. You pull, release, and it shoots off into the sky and brings down 3 Airbusses, 6 satellites and an alien space craft.

As well as putting a big dent in the ceiling.

The string is easy to re-fix. Just take the plastic bit off the ceiling and you'll see where your string tying skills are required.

    That's right! That's what I did!

O-k-a-yyyyyyyyyy ... does the plastic bit on the ceiling unscrew?

My DIY skills are very basic - I've currently been sawing wood (fallen fence panels, thank you Storm Eleanor) and that's more or less my limit :o but I really should expand to pulling a piece of plastic off the ceiling and tying a knot :o

Less stretchy string required. Don't use nylon.

If it's round, and it doesn't have a couple of screwholes either side of the string, then it should just unscrew. BE CAREFUL. There's real live electricity in there, and I hope you won't be trying to unscrew it while standing on a swivel chair.

    Balanced on a beach ball.

Held aloft by a sea lion.

You can take a look inside. Remember: You look with your eyes, not your fingers - you're not Christmas shopping. Many of those lightpulls have a simple peg with a ring fixed to the end. Feed the string through the cover you unscrewed, feed the string through the ring, and tie some sort of sliding knot about half-way down (there's plenty of info on tying a slip knot on t'interwebs).

Half-way down away from the electricity that is.

Then pull it tight and the knot will go up on it's own. Then you can screw the cover back on. Which you did remember to feed the string through - didn't you?

If you don't like the look of it, then do none of the above and just screw the cover back on - you've lost nothing.

You won't learn until you learn, and you can't expect to know before then.

Before you even get that far, just look and see what's there. They're not complicated, but sometimes it's just worth buying a new one.

There's a lot of stuff like that which goes on, people think I'm overly cynical for some reason...

I went shopping at Tesco tonight. As I was going in the shop, the trolley said "Excessive consumerism prompted by short-term emotional boosts are a symptom of, and a driver for, the infantilisation of modern society."

The sign next to it, said that it was one of their deep trolleys.

I think that tonight's motto needs to be: "Always keep your wits about you."

Driving home tonight down a side road, to join a main road. When someone pulls off the main road towards me. Nothing unusual in that, I hear you say, they're just going where I came from.

Except they then pulled broadside to me, trying to do a "turn in the junction". Their indicators had obviously called-in sick today. And it was only about 10 yards in front of me. Luckily my brakes hadn't called-in sick, because it was dark, and wet, and a completely stupid manoeuvre.

Unfortunately again, they'd completely misjudged their turning circle and were stuck up against the kerb, blocking the road. So they had to reverse broadside to me. Also unfortunately once again, they'd misjudged their width, so were half-way on the main road at the same time and so also reversing into the face of on-coming traffic. Thankfully the other drivers' brakes hadn't called-in sick either.

On the bright side, it just shows the Stevie Wonder School of Motoring was being given custom by the Ambulance service.

Because yes - it was an ambulance, and not in an emergency either. Well, assuming brain failure isn't an emergency.
