VAT on returned item

We bought an item from Wickes a couple of days ago, with the advice that if the item didn't fit we could return it for a refund as long as it was in the original packaging.
The item did not fit so we took it back to Wickes for a refund. The refund was given minus the VAT paid. Now we are not talking about an expensive item in this case but wondered if this was correct? I've not come across this before.

I USED TO BE INDECISIVE BUT NOW I'M NOT SO SURE!

second time recently someone has asked the same thing all be it the other was online
You should have got the VAT back, what did they say when you questioned it0 -
If you paid £x for an item, you should be refunded £x when you return it in it's as new condition.
When they refunded you £y, why didn't you query it? If you did, what did they say?0 -
I have returned tons of stuff to Wickes over the years and never had any problems.
Are you a VAT registered business and if so is the invoice made out to this business?0 -
Thanks for the replies everyone. It was my husband who took the item back to the shop, so I wasn't present. The item only cost £11.50 but that's not the point. Sadly my OH is not one for confrontation and accepted their explanation that VAT is not refundable. I'm annoyed that they have done this and annoyed that he accepted it without question.
Aim not VAT registered, merely an everyday customer.I USED TO BE INDECISIVE BUT NOW I'M NOT SO SURE!

I would go back to Wickes with the original receipt and the refund (and statements if needs be) and ask them to refund the correct amount. They should not be withholding a refund for VAT.0 -

But only if the cost of doing so wouldn't wipe out the amount of VAT refund.0 -
