Blinds - 35mm or 50mm?

Hi there,
Blinds newbie here. Moving into my new house shortly and I want some blinds for the front room. Dimensions of the window recess are 173cm wide, 145cm high. Not massive but a decent sized window.
I'm going to go for some horizontal blinds from blinds 2 go but I'm not sure what size -35mm or 50mm. Does it really matter? I got a 50mm sample which I liked but my brother (who doesn’t have blinds) said that would look too big and clunky.
In a nutshell I want some privacy (like what net curtains would give you - I don’t want net curtains) but also want to make sure I can get decent light in too (with the blinds rolled down and "open")
What are the general pros and cons of 35/50mm blinds? (if there are any)

I went for 50mm because they looked more like shutters than the 35mm ones. I had the white wooden venetian blinds.
I also had tape instead of cable on the verticals. This was in one of my back bedrooms.
In my front rooms (living room and two front bedrooms) I have opaque roller blinds in a horizontal pin stripe pattern. They are see through but only from inside to outside, from outside you can see nothing. They let in quite a bit of light."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0
