HSBC & cancelling SO

Options
I'm looking for a little advice and hope you guys can help.

Last month I took my head out of the sand and had a good look at my finances/ debt situation for the first time in my life (I've just turned 40). When I finished having my first ever panic attack I contacted the CCCS. Although I have to wait another 3 weeks for my appointment with the counseller I have followed the initial advice I was given and have opened a basic bank account and tried to cancel my SO and DD with my HSBC current account.

I have managed to cancel everything, except for the SO for my personal loan. I have tried to cancel this three times - once by phone, once by letter and once by internet banking. I have also tried to amend the SO so the payment amount was £0. I have printed out the confirmation of my instructions on the internet and have a copy of the letter I have written (although I didn't send it RD I know the letter has been received as they have responded to the letter). Since the account is overdrawn and the only money going in is the token payments I have offered, if the SO goes through it will be recalled and I will be charged for this.

I don't want to antagonise the bank as I have a feeling my options are going to be either an IVA or, more likely, bankruptcy, but neither do I want to be racking up bank charges.

Any advice on what I should do?

  • You will be unable to cancel the standing order as personal loan payments have to be made by this method from you current account. If you look at the terms and conditions of the personal loan it will probably explain this to you.
