The Amazon echo has really dropped in price. Now that it has, I was considering buying one for my brother as a Christmas present.Has anyone have one and is it any good or a waste of money ?

I have a dot and love it, use it mainly for listening to music. I am a prime member which means I can listen to music 'free' I believe non prime members have to pay a small monthly fee - something you need to look into if your bother isn't a prime customer.
I also use it for notes and asking the weather etc.
One thing I would mention if your brother has small children I would not recommend, the music it plays are all explicit versions so chance of swearing, unfortunately there seems no way to be able to turn this off to only play clean versions.0 -
I have a 'Dot', I work irregular hours so every night just shout out when I want the alarm (or not)

I have the Echo and 4 "dots" and would not be without any of them, along with battery packs no matter where I am {house/garden ect} and as a prime member I have all the music and information I want with just a comment or request.0

True some of the songs we ask for are not available but there is still plenty to keep us happy. I was thinking that if you don't have prime as I understand it you have to pay the £4/month, at least with prime there is the more limited version available 'free'
I would not be happy giving a gift that forced the recipient to pay a monthly fee.0 -
On prime day I think the dots were £34 and the echo was £89?
Expect them to get cheaper still.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I give up enough privacy as it is, without giving some huge corporation access to every conversation I have at home.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Thank you everyone for your advice.it is much appreciated.i think I will ask my sister-in-law regarding the monthly fee for the music and take it from there. I agree, I am not happy about giving a gift that has a fee attached. I was checking out the dot reviews and it gets really good ones. Seemingly a newer version is about to be released so this version could go down even further in price. If it does might just get one for myself. Thank you all again.0

The problem is adverts and TV shows set them off. Advert for the Dot today where the guy says buy catfood. I wonder how many people will have catfood in their Amazon baskets??Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

:rotfl:if they do just goes to show the ad campain has worked!
We couldn't do that in our house, I have turned off that function off I have a child in the house so am not taking any chances :rotfl:
But for an adult household it is a really handy tool, I would use it if I lived on my own.0
