I don’t know if it would help with your budgeting but you can now pay your NT membership monthly so you won’t need to find the whole sum in one go.
    Save £10,500 - £2673.77 - 25.5%
    Pay off £7000 - £1743 - 19.4%

That's good to know, XSpender. Might be useful to HH and her family. I wasn't aware of it myself but we aren't interested in joining NT because there are so few NT properties within anything like reasonable and affordable driving distance. We wouldn't get our money's worth:(

Love your signature by the way and empathise with it. I've been scrabbling my way out of that same black hole for years and can now just about see over the rim. Good luck with your escape from it:beer:
  • I pay £6.25 per month for our Nat Trust membership. This is for a ‘one adult family’ membership and then I go free with their Access For All (Carer’s) card. It’s probably the same or less for a couple’s membership Xx

I was only saying to my mum yesterday about hindsight and what I would change if I could go back. However I am very much a happy person, I realise the mistakes I made way back when and I am just grateful today for what I have. It then makes me wonder if I had made better decisions where would I be and would I be any happier .?

Great quote here from Cumbria. I've had people ask me in the past if I really wish that I hadn't met my husband as I didn't have the best of times with him. But if I hadn't met him I wouldn't have had my darling DD so things work out in the end.

Hope you had a lovely day today at the NT place and I agree that you should try and keep up the membership as it gives you so much pleasure.

My diary: “Seasidegal's Scrimpy Retirement Diary!”
  • Thank you, those were really lovely words:A

I'm glad you're feeling a lot more cheerful today:j. Sunshine always lifts the spirits doesn't it especially at the back end of the year.

I probably am tired but I don't feel sleepy at the moment. I'll probably nod off in the armchair when I'm trying to read my book after tea and want to stay alert to finish it:rotfl:

Well done on your book bargains yesterday:T. Since finding your diary I've become more interested in historical fiction again thanks to you. I saw Hilary Mantel being interviewed on a book programme the other week and she was talking about her career. I still have a copy of Wolf Hall bought at a car boot sale a couple of years ago and not even started yet. It's the actual thickness of the book that keeps putting me off starting it:o

I don't think everyone realises that she wrote in several different genres not just mediaeval history and I happened to come across her book on the French Revolution (a period in history that fascinates me even more after reading a brilliant biography of Madame Tussaud which read like a novel). It's called A Place of Greater safety and I spotted it on the charity stall in the foyer of the hospital the other day. Looks almost unread, in hardback and only cost £2 although I added a bit more as a small donation as the charity raises money for the hospital. Chuffed to have found it, have been looking out for it for ages:j.. It's another thick one though, 749 pages and quite a small font. I need plenty of time to give to this one, I know her books are really detailed and need 100% concentration. Since I was ill, that's something I'm still lacking, hopefully not forever though.
That book sounds very interesting Carboot and a good find. Books and nature give so much pleasure I find.
Like you HH I wish I had known then what I know now. It's fine. I know now. The bank is not my friend and I intend not to have debt or credit again. :)
Yes at least we know now.

Thanks. We will pay monthly if we can't afford the whole amount upfront.

    That does seem reasonable.

  • We had a really nice walk. It was the most beautiful autumn day with the leaves turning golden in the sunshine. My mum would have really enjoyed it. Then we went back to my stepdad's house for dinner.

I'm surrounded by my mum's things there and yet she is missing. But I do feel closer to her at her home among the possessions she loved, so it's sad and yet comforting.
