Master Socket BT

You will have to excuse me I am not good with technology at all

I am having a new kitchen . The master socket needs moving but I also have a extension lead for another room plugged into it

Can my white extension lead be hard wired into the master socket?

Can the master socket then be relocated to somewhere else in the kitchen.

There are no wires or boxes attached to the house so I have no idea how the master socket was put where it is in the first place

I have a telegraph pole outside and it looks like the wire goes into the roof space some how

Hope this makes sense

Your master socket should always be the first socket on the line.

Any slave sockets should run from the back of the master socket to somewhere else. If you move the master socket, the slave will need to run from the new location.

Technically any work to the BT socket is supposed to be conducted by an authorised BT engineer, of course they'll not have any records of where it is supposed to be. If you've a telegraph pole and line going into the loft you'll likely find it has been run down the wall behind the plaster so moving it properly won't be an easy job.

Other than extending off it, the way a BT engineer would move it would probably be to find the cable in the loft, cut it and join a new wire in that can be run down a wall to wherever you want it to go. BT will charge a fortune as these days they will only put a socket somewhere that is easy to get to. If you catch an engineer in a van down your road you may find they're willing to do a foreigner but I think that is more risky for them these days as they aren't supposed to.
  • Remember that the BT line into your home up to and including the master socket itself is BT property. You are not meant to move it. Technically though it is actually easy to extend the cable coming into your property and to move the master socket (suitable junction boxes can be bought for £2 or £3). Basic tools and knowledge required.

But in future if you have a line fault and you need to call BT out - the engineer will quickly spot the non-standard wiring and will want to replace it - very likely at a cost to you. Except in exceptional circumstances, a BT engineer would never put an extension junction box before the master socket.

In summary... you are not meant to move the master socket. It is however easy to do so. But if you get found out in future then you are very likely to receive a bill for running a new cable from the pole outside to inside your home. That's not cheap.

They are more likely to charge for making good the existing wiring using their standard connectors and crimps, rather than replace the entire dropwire, which will be the circa £150 charge for moving the socket that so many are reluctant to pay (I'm not - I paid it, for the simple reason I didn't want comeback on me if there were to be a line fault in future).

Hire a local telecoms engineer from yellowpages.
You will need to move the BT socket and the extension.

Run an extension cable from your master socket to where you want the master to be. Solder the cable to the new extension and make it the master then make the old master an extension. I did this and when the BT engineer came to do some work on the system I just pointed out the new socket as the master. No probs at all.
If your really worried put a cornflake packet over the old master socket.

Not sure why you want to "solder" the cable to an extension socket, a simple IDC tool is all that's required.
