Quote for re-doing garden from scratch

Options
I am aiming to get other quotes but I just wanna get a feel for this first one...

So our back garden is 7m x 4.6m, currently it sort of slopes downwards towards the house, and has (poorly done) paving down one side and along the edge of the house. The "lawn" area is just scrubby stoney soil.

So we had a local company round to see what they thought we could do, and their plan was:

"Create a split-level area by installing solid oak sleepers, these will be sanded and oiled for extra protection.

· Construct solid sub-base on both areas ready for paving on the bottom area and the resin surfacing on the top area.

· Block or cobble on all spans and grout with resin grout in gret to finish"

Apparently they do this resin type finish that is porous so lets the rain through...

Anyway the total for this is £7k... to me it seems a huge amount. What do people think...?

    What do you want?

It sounds to me, from the description, that they're trying to sell you a bit of an "aspirational garden" ....

Gardeners don't come cheap .... odd that, it's just tossing mud about isn't it.

So, do you want "A wow garden"? Or "just something doing that tidies it up"?
  • I certainly wouldn't mind an aspirational garden! :)
And if £7k is the going rate for that then that's fair enough, I was just trying to see if it was!

You need other quote. None of us can determine if its good value or not. It depends on labour rates, material specifications, access arrangements, ground conditions etc.
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.
  • I've done 3 gardens in my last 2 houses. One was a tiered grass garden with sleepers - cost £7k. One with a sweeping driveway and two patches of grass and a big bed - cost £8k and one last year which was a patio, large amount of grass - cost £7k. All roughly the same size as yours.
    Thinking critically since 1996....
