Adding additional layer to existing window

Hi all,

I'm looking to DIY my windows to have an additional layer as the soubd of traffic below is too loud. I live on the 6 floor flat next to a dual carriage way and roundabout, the traffic and engine revving is affecting our sleep very much..

I've filled the gaps up with foam and tape but the soubd is clearly coming through the glass. I wanted to ask if its possible to add another lay of glass to the exisiting one? There's space of 3cms between the original glass so I was thinking to add the new glass with a gap of 2cm between the new and old one.

Do you think this is feasible?

Appreciate the advice

Many thanks

2 cm won't do a great deal to be honest. The best result is from a 10cm gap. If you are sure sound coming through the glass you can get the glass double glazed unit changed to a triple glazed and specify 3 different thicknesses such a 4mm float, 6mm and 6.4lam. Sounds expensive but it's not as expensive as you think.
Don't forget sound comes through the frame and if it's an upstairs window you'll get sound coming in through the eaves
  • Thanks doc Matt.

Yeah that's true. I think ill get someone to install another doubleglazing window behind the current one. As sound will come through the frames also. :(

When I was stationed in Germany just after the war the barracks there were all double glazed with two window frames about six inches apart.

I knew nothing about double glazing prior to going there.

Most impressed with the insulation and the way it cut down on noise from outside
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • I'm going to Velcro the borders of the wall with thick sound proof curtains. What do you guys think?
