Skiing / Snowboarding Recommendations (closeby preferred)

I'm looking to take my wife skiing for new year and wondered if any of you guys or gals had some recommendations for locations.
Ideally the resort/hotel/cabin/apartments would be right near the slope (as in walking distance), have decent views of the area. Be recommended for friendly staff, food, drinks etc.
Hopefully somewhere in France (for closeness) but I would consider other Ski resorts. I have never been skiing or snowboarding myself so this would be a first for me.
It doesn't necessarily have to be the cheapest place but somewhere nice would be great.
If you can fly there from Manchester, Doncaster or East Midlands it would be a bonus. :j
