UPVC Multi point lock

I have recently purchased my first property and moved in three weeks ago :j

I have UPVC front and back doors with multi point locks. Yesterday after coming in from the rear garden, I closed door and pulled up handle on the door and went to lock as normal. The key turned but not enough to engage lock. It was like the handle was not able to be turned up fully. I used GT85 on all the parts down the side strip of the door, left for a bit and tried again without success.

So when I turn the handle up, I noticed that the hooks that normally slide out are only coming out maybe half of the way. I googled and watched a few videos on how to get the mechanism working again. I unscrewed the panel running down the side of the door to get into the locks, when I took this off, the bottom hook mechanism fell into the inside of the door cavity

I tried using one of those magnetic entending rod things to try to fish it out from inside the door but it's not happening. This was now at 1.00am so I closed the door over for the night but still unable to lock.

This morning I've taken the panel off to be able to access the sort of middle main bit of the lock to see if I am able to get the deadlock to function so that I can at least secure the door, without the hook bits being used. Would I have to actually remove this part? I took the barrel out and tried to remove the rest but figured I should have a look online before I go any further.

What I did notice is that the top sliding hook bit is attached onto the actual UPVC door frame with a screw, whereas the bottom one (that fell into the inside of the door) wasn't held in place with a screw and really just wedged into the space that was cut from the UPVC.

Am I going to have a problem fitting a new multi point lock in this door? Could this be the issue that caused the lock to fail? I think the lock is an ERA type euro lock, but unsure which model etc

I know Screwfix stock these types and can deliver tomorrow, but should I just admit defeat and get a locksmith to do the whole lot, I am a female living alone so accept that I may have to take this option.

Any ideas of what the cost would be?

Thanks for any advice.

  • Ok I am now realising that if I'd left the machine screws in place when removing strip, it would have retained the mechanisms and they would have come away when I pulled the strip off.

As a best case scenario, if I put the strip back in place and put the machine screws back in place and get the locks out, I could attempt a fix and get the lock working again, albeit with only one sliding hook functional?
