Has the law suddenly changed regarding Double White Lines?

I am sure it has'nt

I was out yesterday and there were lots of people overtaking and crossing them in some very dangerious places (that is why they are there) one car I saw overtook 6 or 7 cars only narrowingly missing an oncoming car.

Be prepared for the 'cool story bro' ' brigade. ;)

I was taught to treat them like a brick wall.

In the last couple of years I have certainly noticed an increase in people parking on sections of road with solid white lines, usually on blind bends which require you to very dangerously enter the wrong side of the road to pass.
  • Many people do stupid things on the road as they know they will more than likely get away with it due to the lack of police patrols.
When they meet a truck coming the other way they can have some time to reflect on their stupidity(if they are lucky)

Trouble is councils painting double white lines on sections of road where it's perfectly safe to overtake, this is where people start to ignore them and then those people go on to ignore those double white lines that are actually legitimate.
On the other hand there are areas of broken white line where you'd need a Bugatti Veyron to actually overtake safely.

The road marking are so inconsistent that i'm not surprised people ignore them.

  • It wasn't anything slow moving was it? It's legal to overtake anything doing less than 10mph.

No, it isn't. It's only legal to overtake pedal cycles, horses and road maintenance vehicles displaying the appropriate sign.

I think you need to take some lessons from Edward de Bono to expand your thinking.

Would you drive through a brick wall? If not, then treat double white lines in the same way.
