Sainsbury's Bank balance transfer nightmare

After seeing it recommended in an MSE newsletter, I applied for a Sainsbury's Bank credit card so I could transfer a balance. It's been an absolute nightmare and I'd appreciate any advice.

The latest problem I'm dealing with now is Sainsbury's have transferred a balance from a card from a bank I don't bank with and not the one I requested. It's cost me money in interest on the old card and it's costing me a lot of time and hassle, because I have to do all the chasing on this.

They said it can take them 8-10 weeks to investigate what's happened and I have to call them every week to get progress reports. (Absolutely no offer to contact me - I have to do all the work.) Meanwhile, there's a balance sitting on the account and I have to call them to make sure they don't take any payments for it. (I haven't used the card for purchases at all.)

What kind of recompense do I have on this? It's been a complete shambles from Sainsbury's.

Have you made a formal complaint?

As to recompense, you'd expect to be put back in the financial position you'd have been in had the issue not arisen...plus something for distress and inconvenience.
  • Sainsbury's are very good with complaints. Write to them formally. Ask what you want back. Calculate the extra money you have been charged as a result of their incompetence. They will give more for goodwill.
