Deposit taken now hotel has cancelled my booking

10 months ago I choose a hotel through booking.com for our holiday in Daytona Beach. On a holiday related matter I have tried to contact this hotel 4 times in the last 3-4 months none of which they replied to. A couple of days ago booking.com contacted me to say that due to hurricane damage the hotel was now closed and would not be able to honour our booking. I have had no refund of our £130 deposit, all booking.com have said regarding our deposit is that it will be returned in the next 10-15 days by the hotel. Can booking.com really wipe their hands of this booking even though the booking was made through then and my card details were given to them?

Who actually took the payment? You may give the card details to booking.com but often it is the hotel that takes the payment, in which case it's up to them to refund you.

If they don't then contact your card issuer for a chargeback.
  • The hotel took your payment and your contract is with them. All booking.com system does is pass your details on. Booking.com aren't 'wiping their hands'. They've told you what the hotel has communicated to them. 10/15 days for a refund isn't bad.
  • Annoying as it may be, giving them a little time to rebuild the office, get the power reconnected and recharge the credit card machine isn't unreasonable.
  • Yes, have some patience!
Difficult conditions out there, perhaps you would prefer to turn up to no hotel?

Probably annoying for you, I would certainly be a little disappointed that the arrangements will have to be changed but put into perspective you could be there when booked and have no bed! Perhaps an opportunity to make a few changes?

Booking.com as an agent seems to be acting reasonably but cannot say the same necessarily for hotel lack of communication you mention! Opportunity to book a better place?
