Basic use tablet, ideas please ?

My wife has never shown any interest in the internet and only uses her mobile in an emergency and never texts. I'm thinking of buying her a basic tablet so I can give her links to newspapers/magazines etc. I'm sure then, she would be able to receive and send text via the tablet. Oh, I would connect it using my home wifi. Do all tablets allow texts to be received/ sent this way. I'm sure she would find it easier using touch screen than fiddling with phone keys.

actually, would that link work on my ipad too? I have noticed that some texts come to it, others don't

Think about a cheap and easy to use second user Smartphone with a reasonably large screen. Perhaps a Lumia 640. That example £34.95
That way you can use standard SMS as well as certain messaging applications, browse the Internet etc.

Bear in mind that I'm not suggesting to get that particular device, as you may prefer one in better condition.

£15 would be good. 535 has touchscreen issues, but fitting it with a £2 glass protective screen can solve that.
