Insured to drive someone elses car

Through Admiral i can drive someone elses car with their permission. My policy states i'll be insured third party.

I've only ever had comprehensive insurance, i've never really paid attention to the other two.

So basically i'm just wondering - what does that mean then, if i have an accident in someone elses car - be it my fault or someone elses - i drive in to someone else or they drive in to me, what would my cover actually cover basically?

If you were driving someone elses car, the insurance would only cover damage etc to the other car if you were to blame.

Obviously whoever is to blame, you have to inform your own ins company
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • If its your fault you owe your friend a new car or some money.

If its a 3rd party fault and they admit it and their insurance offer to settle then claim through them. If not you insurer may say thanks for letting us know and good luck sorting it out.

Any clauses about their car being insured and being a family members car?
Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...

  • Read the small print!
    - In some cases it will say "for emergency use only" (up to you to define emergency)
    - In ALL cases it will say "3rd party only" in that you are covered for damage caused to others, or (as previously mentioned damage cause to you if it is another person fault 100%). This problem arises if blame is not clear and you will not be covered for 'your part' of the blame
    - In most cases it will state you cannot use this clause to release a car from being seized due to the current driver not having insurance (or similar words).
The devil is in the detail (small print)

Not true, Adrian Flux offer fully comp DOC cover for values up to £20k.

Chubb offer products with fully comp DOC cover too.
  • The exact wording is as follows:
The policyholder may also drive with the consent of the owner
a private motor car as long as the other car is not a car either
owned by you or your partner or hired or leased to you or your
partner under a hire purchase or leasing agreement or hired or
rented to you or your partner under a car hire or rental
agreement, within the UK, providing there is a valid insurance
policy in force for that car. Please note this cover is Third Party
Only. All drivers must also be driving in accordance with the terms
of a valid licence and must not be disqualified from driving.
So basically i can drive a car so long as my wife doesn't own it? Therefore i can drive my mothers car ok, my brothers & sisters cars or any friends car etc, just not my wifes car?

^^ If the above is the correct understanding then what is a 'partner'? Is it just husband-wife? My sister was asking about this too. She's with Diamond although her wording is the exact same as mine. She has no husband but does have a boyfriend.

Do they co-habit? If it specifically meant husband/wife, it would have said spouse.

No. My sister lives with my mother. Her boyfriend lives elsewhere. She stays over at his most weekends but she lives with my mother.

He is not her partner then.

And in all cases, as stated, the other car must be insured directly under another policy.

Yeah it is. I think it's more for maybe when he's had a few drinks & she is on the soft drinks - wondering whether she could drive him home in his car kind of thing.

She could be insured as an additional driver on his insurance and he could be added to her insurance as an additional driver.
