British Gas quote Magnetic System Filter and Hydroflow

Quote for above at annual service for £470. No breakdown of cost or indication of whether one more important to get done than the other.. We have lived in house 3 years and inherited a potterton promax HE plus boiler with a Megaflo cylinder alongside I think about ten years old now. BG have not suggested the work previously at the time of annual services.
Neighbour let engineer in so wasn't able to discuss the suggested work.BG say engineer will call me; they cannot give me any info.
Central heating works fine; we never have cold spots; need to bleed rads or have any noises in system. A star performer compared with other systems we have had over the years
Is there any point having a magnetic filter if there is sludge already in the system? I would assume that at some point inhibitor has been put in system -doesn't this do same job? Should more be added periodically ?
Re the hydroflow, this is for limescale I think? Again this is unlikely to get rid of what is there? Presumably it will protect in boiler area but from what people say in random posts it won't help with shower screens, taps etc. On manufacturers websites the word 'may' is used. It's HS 38 from what I gather from BG site but talks about 2-4 bed houses - we have a big 4 bed house over 3 floors plus 3 heated towel rails in bathrooms.
Leaving aside whether could get the work done cheaper, is it worth doing at all when we have no obvious problems and are not planning on having a power flush(not that BG have suggested it)
Comments to help me get my head round this are welcomed - really I need to know whether the work will maintain the heating system much better going forward even if it cannot undo pre existing damage and also any questions in particular I should ask the engineer if he does happen to phone me as requested.
One last thing- when we need a new boiler do the magnetic filter and hydroflow stay in place or have to be replaced?
Thank you

  • I would have a filter fitted but not the hydro flow and maybe get a couple of other quotes to have it done.

The filter will protect the boiler and would stay when the boiler is changed.

    Why not the hydroflow please?

Those electro-magnetic devices are just snake oil. I had one a few years back. It actually made the limescale build up in my immersion tank really quickly.

Removed the device when changing the bottom heating element and cleaned out the limescale. 10 years on, tank is completely free of limescale.

The Magnaclense is a worthwhile investment though.
