Insuring a car that doesn't exist

quick scenario...

Daughter saving up for car 'X' which she will be getting in about a years time. This will be her first car and first insurance. Current quotes are around the 2 grand mark.

The cheapest car on the planet to insure is a 900cc skoda citygo se greentech. With the maximum excess and third party only cover on her provisional license the insurance is £400 per year.

What's stopping me insuring a fictitious skoda citygo for a year so that when it's time to get car 'x' she will have a Years no claims under her belt and hopefully the price will be more than 400 cheaper than the 2k?

Flame suit on.

The fact that the insurance company will want a vehicle registration for the fictitious car?

  • You do realise her insurance is likely to go up when she gets a full licence?

Quite simply fraud. You will be making an untrue statement about being the owner/keeper of a vehicle that doesn't exist, or at least not yours.

You really haven't given this much thought, have you.

A few years ago I managed to insure a vehicle which I neither owned nor was the keeper of - might still possible?

But you didn't say you were though (at least you I hoped you didn't), which is where the fraud comes into it.

No, I answered honestly that I didn't own it and wasn't the keeper, the insurer never even asked if I had permission to use it, and though I did have permission it could just as well have been a random car that I'd spotted on the way home from work.
  • All well and good until the car is involved in a serious accident and the insurer is on the hook for a major claim for personal injury.

You could always sell your car and buy a 900cc skoda citygo se greentech and get your daughter to insure it with you as a named (and the main) driver. You'll soon discover if the compromise is worth the potential saving.
