Own domain and email security

Options
I have a hosting package with 50webs, i use it to store family pictures etc and for popping the occasional picture on a forum.

Looking to move all my emails over to my own domain name instead of using all the free options. I have LOTS. I do not give my real details out when registering the various emails and with tighter registrations these days its time i move away from them i think.

But what measures do i need to take regarding security if i use my domain with my 50webs hosting?

Just a good strong password for the domain and emails?

Thanks

Just make sure that your Web domain admin username and password is different than your day-to-day email username and password. So if one gets compromised the other is safe.

You can use a "catch all" address (This address will receive anything sent to *@yourdomain.co.uk that does not have a user linked to it)

Upside it's easy to set up and forget.

Downside of this is Lots of SPAM (and i mean LOTS!!!) but you can use filters in your email client to grab the "throwaway" names you use for registering then delete the spam. (but if you've limited email space this can quickly fill your mailboxes!)

Then later If you want to get really geeky ;) Read up on creating and hosting your own mailserver with something like an R-Pi ;) lol

Its for moving my important stuff over, no generic websites and forum registrations etc.

So spam should be kept down.

I just set up a catch-all forward on my domain's email settings. Then I use free email hosting with GMX.

Essentially, the domain just forwards everything sent to your domain on to your email account.

Other than a good password on your domain account, and another good (different) password on your email account, you don't need to do anything else.

As with any email (whether sent to your own domain or not), it's worth disabling images and scripts in emails by default, and using an antivirus with an email scanner.

I tend to use thunderbird to collect all my emails.

To get free emails they tend to want your life story and phone number etc which i do not wish to give out.

Enough calls already. A small trip to A&E for a family member and the following day missed calls with some NHS survery it seems. No message ever left so that gets onto the blocked list.

I do not remember them saying the contact details are to be use for surveys etc.

  • I've had my own domains for over 15 years and the amount of spam I get is virtually zero. My host has Spam Assassin installed which is brilliant, lets everything through that is genuine and filters out the rubbish.

I also use a catch-all email address, but that can be a bit hit and miss.

But do create an SPF record to prevent your email address from being used illicitly to send spam.

Should probably make a new thread but, when registering domains why do they offer the privacy service as a free addon or even a paid for option.

With Easily i have always hidden my private details.

Technically the owners details should be on the domain registration to conform to Nominet/ICANN rules & Regulations (and local laws where applicable!).

What Easily do, if you want to keep your details private, is THEY register the domain under their name and give you full access to it as if you were the owner. When you leave and take the domain with you they just transfer it to your name.

Quite a number of registrars do this. Personally I am not happy to use this arrangement. I have signed up to access Nomimet directly and from there it is simple to tick a box to opt out of having personal details displayed by whois.

No .co.uk on that and starts at €15.

Is it me or are some sneaky people trying to nick the domain i keep searching for? Nice try but i made a slight variation as i only wanted prices i know the domain is free.

A couple i have searched for are no longer available.

And its not something most people would want. Who wants a bunch of consenants and no vowels? :)
