No plinth/kickboard under kitchen cabinets

Options
I live in a rented flat and my partner and I have lived here for about 5 months now. Under the kitchen cabinets there is no plinth / kickboard and at this time of year I am starting to notice a massive draft coming from underneath.

We only have three kitchen cabinets running along the floor, the problem is the majority of them are on a raised surface (with shorter legs from the cabinets), but the end of one of the cabinets comes off the raised surface - so this leg is longer in order to reach the floor.

How to I find plinths that will fit this ledge? Will I have to get a plinth at the bigger size and then cut it down?

Hope all of this makes sense.

(Off topic, should the landlord be doing this? We have asked a lot of her lately and she has attended to everything we have asked but not sure if we would be taking the mick asking for something else to be done as well. I have been draft proofing the rest of the flat as didn't want to ask her but that has just involved caulking, not having to buy kickboards and saw them etc!)

Kickboards will not stop a draft - there is a gap at the top of them so they can run past the sides of each unit. You need to stop the draft before it gets to this location by sealing the floor or the walls - where ever the holes are basically.

Just measure the depth of board you need and head down to a B+Q or similar and see what they have, they can be attached to the legs with clips if suitable or joined together and held in place with kitchen fitters assembly blocks. Stain or paint them to suit.

Close fitting will cut any draft down substantially, if you allow 1-2mm gap then use some draft proofing stuck on the top of the new kickboard before putting it in place. As you are in a flat maybe being up a few floors can make it difficult to locate drafts coming from outside as a waste pipe leaving a sink for example might not be accessible from inside/outside and could have a large hole thru the wall leading to drafts.

  • I was hoping to put insulation under the cupboards then put the kickboard on? Basically our flat has been very shoddily done - there is all exposed wall at the back of the kitchen if you look under cabinets, big holes that go through to other room etc. I don't know how we would even get to all of that to fix it without pulling the kitchen apart?

You could get a roll of rockwool and push it in below the units before adding the kickboards, up to you really.
